The Winter Solstice is upon us and sometimes it's nice to hear some peaceful music that you might not associate (or even know about) to bring in the new season.
I was turned onto Arvo Part's "Spiegel im Spiegel" while listening to CBC's Tempo broadcast a number of years ago. It's so simple, so clean and so calming. To me, it's the essence of a winter day with the snow falling gently outside.
George Winston's album December is a favourite in our house. Greg and his mom used to listen to it while putting their Christmas tree up and the Canon in D variations is one of Greg's most favourite pieces of music. The whole album is amazing but this is the most popular piece from it.
The Snow is Dancing is one of my most favourite Debussy pieces. It's often overshadowed by other more popular pieces from the Children's Suite. Take a listen and see if it doesn't evoke the image of swirling snow.
The final piece I'll link to here is performed by Yo-Yo Ma and is from the movie The Mission. Gabriel's Oboe is such a beautiful piece of music. It makes me hopeful and calm. May your Solsitice and Holiday be peaceful, and filled with hope for a new year.
